The Weekend Update - 7.12.14

Saturday, July 12, 2014 with 21 comments
So, since my end-of-the-week post isn't just about what I got in my mailbox or on my Kindle each week -- though that is a big part of it, I won't lie -- I decided to change up the title and intro a bit.  I might tweak the format a bit over the next few weeks, but for the most part, it'll contain the same stuff: stuff I got, stuff I did, and stuff that's coming up on the blog.  Plus, I get to use the awesome GIF you see here and blow kisses to all the people who sent me lovely books and bookish things.  Oh, and I've started linking up to Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews since I'm not using a specific meme title anymore.  April's also doing her own Stacking the Shelves posts on Sundays.  Stop by and say hi!  =)

What's up, fellow readers? Gettin' lots of sun? Read any good books lately? :P I'll be spending the afternoon trying to convince my 6yo that me reading at the side of the pool with my feet dangling in the water IS me swimming with her. :) We'll see how well that works out.

The garden's doing good...tons of squash and tomatoes coming out of it this week. We had some extra tomatoes pop up that we weren't expecting, so we have to go get more tomato cages this weekend and trellis to run the pickle, cucumber and cantaloupe plants along so they don't inundate everything else. I also need to look through my cookbooks for some recipes, it seems. =)

Anyway, here's what I scored this week:

For Review:

The Best Things in Death (The Memory Chronicles, #1.5)Alias Hook

The Best Things in Death by Lenore Appelhans - Loved Level 2 -- or The Memory of After, as it is now known -- and I really wanted to read this novella featuring character memories before picking up the sequel. Thanks to the author for providing a copy for review!!!
Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen - I received a galley for review, but I didn't get to it before release date. :( So imagine my excitement at receiving a copy of the audiobook with an equally awesome but totally different cover from the hardcover. I hope the narrator is awesome! And I can't promise that I won't be envisioning Hook smoldering like this the whole time:

Purchases:

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson - Of course, I had to have a finished copy of what just may be my favorite book of the year. Don't forget to check out her guest post here on the blog and enter to win yourself a copy!

The 57 Lives of Alex Wayfare (Alex Wayfare, #1)

The 57 Lives of Alex Wayfare by M.G. Buehrlen - First off, I wanted to throw my support behind the (now-defunct) Strange Chemistry author, but this book also sounds incredibly awesome. Time travel? Visions of the past? A mysterious stranger who knows more than he should? Yes, yes, and yes, please! This was yesterday's Kindle Daily Deal and I just couldn't pass it up.

So, that's my haul. How about you? What did you get this week?

Jen's Currently Reading/Listening To:

Alias HookHeir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3)I'm still reading HOF. I spent the week catching up on OUAT instead of reading. Just wasn't in the mood, and HOF hasn't grabbed me yet. I think I miss the audiobook narrator reading the story to me. :( Plus, I'm still reeling from leftover sads from my Crown of Midnight re-read/listen. Things are pretty bleak right now.

After seeing Killian finally get the girl this week, I am definitely in the mood for this Peter Pan retelling of sorts from Hook's perspective. I seriously, seriously hope the narrator has a fabulous accent like the actor who portrays Hook on OUAT.

Upcoming Reviews:

Mortal Danger (Immortal Game, #1)Between the Spark and the Burn (Between, #2)Five Ways to Fall (Ten Tiny Breaths, #4)Second Chance Summer

  3. I love your garden. <3 I'm so jealous of your fruits. I need your states warmth! Please send it this way. lol. :) We will be working on ours tomorrow morning our squash is out of control, and I need to tame them. aka, tie them shits to a stick. Plus our tomato plants are busting out of their cages. So we needed to get some poles to help support them. The grape tomato plant is taller than I am.

I think i spy a yellow squash in that one pic? :)

Hope you're having a great weekend!

I almost got The 57 Lives of Alex Wayfare, but decided to pass on it. I have way too many books to read right now. lol

    1. I will gladly send some of this heat your way. :) Our squash is out of control, too, but not like the cantaloupe. We need to strengthen the tomato plants, too. Looks like we've got our work cut out for us this weekend, huh?

I have too many books, too, but I can't pass up a deal on a book that I've already been wanting to read. The reviews for it are pretty good, too.

    1. I wonder if it would be good on audio. I imagine so. And I did like Five Ways to Fall...it might even be my new favorite in that "series"!

  5. Ohh, I hope HoF picks up for you. :(( I'll be devastated if it's a let down after CoM that's for sure and certain. But your garden is great! And...sorry to break it to you, but feet in the pool is DEFINITELY NOT swimming. I can't even count how many times I had to convince my sisters of that. Pushing them in works well. If you don't value your life. x)

    1. I'm sure it will. I'm just still devastated by the end of CoM so I'm sure that's part of it. Haha...I'm sure my daughter will agree with you. But she'd better not DARE push me in. :)

    1. Alias Hook is pretty great so far...I like hearing Hook's side of things. And thanks....a garden is a lot of work, but the payout is worth it. :)

  8. I was GOING to get sun this summer, but so far I haven't enjoyed it ONCE (okay, once on vacation, but not like I planned). Urgh. I need to get rid of my stupid "farmer's tan." That Hook gif? Perf.

    1. Hehe...we're still all sportin' "farmer's tans" around here, too. Well, except maybe Katie...she's seen a LOT of sun this summer. And I know, right? LOVE HIM!

  11. Your garden is coming along beautifully. As I think I've said before, I love the idea of a garden, but don't really care for the work it takes...I'm lazy like that. I really want to get to Alias Hook. It sounds so interesting, but I'm going through a bit of a slump right now and nothing is keeping my attention. The audio might be the way to go on that one. I'm excited for Kiss of Deception. I skipped picking it up when it was available and then have heard nothing but good things. Great haul and happy reading! I hope you were able to get some reading in during your daughter's pool time. :)
