The Bookshelves Behind the Bloggers

Wednesday, January 22, 2014 with 29 comments
Okay, so on Monday, you guys were introduced to the newest blogger here at The Starry-Eyed Revue. And yesterday, you got to read April's first review and saw just how awesome it's going to be having her around here.  And, sure, some of you may have already known who April was and what she was about.

But, I think that the best way to get to know a fellow reader is by taking a peek at what's on their shelves or on their Kindle, as it were.  But I'm not just going to call out April and make her share on her own.  Several people have hinted that they'd like a peek at my shelves, as well, and though I'm not doing a full shelf tour today -- first and foremost, I don't like being on camera or hearing my recorded voice (I sound about twenty years younger than I am) -- I am going to give you a little tour of where I spend a lot of my free time.

First, though, I think that since April is our resident newbie, she should get top (shelf) billing.  =)

Hi Everyone!! I feel so special going first! Jen is spoiling me already. <3 lol Anyway. I have one large book shelf.

Here is the top. As you can see, my Jenny Han books are being protected by a monkey squinky. ( Great series btw) I didn't even realize he was there till I took the pic.

And the bottom. Clearly I need to clean shop! Stuffed to the brim. I do plan on getting another book shelf someday, but right now we are renovating the house, so there isn't any room at the moment. That brings me to my prized possession.... My kindle. I'm for sure an ebook girl. I love physical books, but my kindle goes everywhere with me. Here is a peek of some books I have on there.

There are so many that I haven't read yet! That's sad. Shed some tears for me please. I need more time in the day.

Jen's turn now...

Okay, a little prior warning, guys:  I'm a bit of a perfectionist, a little obsessive when it comes to organizing my books. And the way you see my shelves here is probably -- most likely -- not the way the shelves will look in a month's time. Okay, the shelves will still be the same, but the placement of the books will assuredly not be.  Here goes nothin'...

This is where the "magic" happens.  Lol.  Nah, it's just my desk,
with the family portrait Katie drew for me, my movie souvenirs and
other kitschy stuff, and my unread ARCs...at least the ones I
plan to read soon.
This is my other workspace.  Or, well, there's one other one,
but it's not set up right now.  I had to move it out of the way
in order to take pics of my shelves. :)  But isn't that just a
lovely view from my office window?
This is the other half of my office. I wish I'd bought the
shelves in any color but dark brown because they look
black. Wonder if I could paint them and just how much
work that would be...
Here's a better view of that first shelf on the left.
Hanging above it are the Shadow & Bone and the
Siege & Storm maps/posters.  Don't they look awesome
side-by-side like that?

And here's a better view of that shelf on the right.  The
one that's under that gorgeous signed poster of the cover
for These Broken Stars.  Seriously, that thing is so
freaking gorgeous...I would totes marry it.

And this is my shelf of favorites.  Hard to tell what some
of them are, I'm sure, but I'll bet that top one on the right is pretty
obvious.  =)  There's a shelf here for fantasy -- okay, more than

one -- one for contemporaries, one for dystopians, etc.  It was
pretty difficult deciding which books made the cut -- and which
did not -- but I'm pretty happy overall.  For now, anyway.  Oh,
and then there are my leatherbound classics up top, plus the
mini bookshelf necklace my mom made me.  I think it's
safe to say I love this shelf best.  :D

Sorry for the not-so-great pics, guys.  I should have known better than to use my iPhone, but I didn't want to drag out my good camera.  Plus, I'm not even sure the battery is charged on that thing.  :(  I promise I'll do a for-real shelf tour soon and just suffer my lil girl voice.  :)

But after seeing April's shelves, I'm even more sure that this co-bloggership was destined to happen.  Did you see how many of the same books we own?  Or, well, you could see that if you were able to make them out in my pics...again, sorry.

So, what do you guys think?  What do our shelves -- and the books sitting on them -- say about us?  All good things, we hope.  :)  Jen is sure glad she gave away that hardcover set of the Hush, Hush series.  She doesn't at all like to think about what those books might have said about her.  Or what having owned them in the first place still says about her.  :P

I mean, at least we don't look like this:

Right?!?  =)

Anyway, we'd love to check out your shelves, too, if you've done a similar post!

  1. They're so pretty!!! My room is too small to have that many books, but the stuffed toys on top of my bookshelves make up for it. Then there's also a teetering TBR pile on my desk. I recognise lots of the books you've got there :)

    1. My office is too small, too, but I make it work. Of course, I had to get rid of my comfy reading chair in order to add that favorites shelf, but it's worth it. :)

    2. my shelf wont even fit in my office. You cant tell, but it's down in a corner at the bottom of our stairwell right now. I will find it a better home someday. :)

  2. Those shelves look very nice and organized. I have one tiny shelf where everything is literally stuffed all crazy. I use my kindle mostly now because I lack space. I one day dream of getting lots and lots of shelves so my books aren't shelves three deep and I can actually see what I have LOL

    1. That's how my shelves started, too, but the hubs got tired of me complaining. :P

    2. lol, I'm at the point of I buy any more physical books, they will be stacked in front of others and I hate that! because they aren't on display then. So I feel you.

  3. All of your guys shelves are so nice looking! After I left for school, I packed all my books away, so I don't really have a shelf anymore. BUT. I guess I buy a lot of books for my Kindle, so it evens out!

One day I'll have more shelves!

    1. As long as you always have something to read, I don't think it matters what format it is. A library is a library, whether it's a physical one or on your Kindle. :)

    2. I agree with Jen. A library is a library. There is just something so awesome about being able to carry half my collection in my purse. :)

  4. Ooooh I love your dark brown shelves! One day my books will be all nice and organized like that. Well, I mean, they're pretty organized right now, but I also have a lot just lying around that really need to get their own bookcase. Hopefully that will happen soon!

    1. Heh...mine were kind of all over the place before I cleaned and organized this weekend so that I *could* take these pictures, bad as they are.

  5. Jen your organizational skills are impressive. I love your library/workspace room. Poor April's shelf looks like it will crash down at any moment due to weight. Might want to get on obtaining another shelf soon, lol.

    1. Thanks...I think it's more of an obsession that just good ole organization, but whatever works, right? And, hey, I'd rather have full shelves like April's than sad, empty shelves. :P

    2. haha! this is true!! But don't you fear! It may be stuffed but it's sturdy!! Target special right there!

Jen's shelves look amazing. I could stare at them all day. <3

  6. Love this post :-) Nice to see a bit of each of your spaces. Love your organization Jen! I am envious of all your shelving. I share my 'office' with the upstairs den/gameroom so I'm in a corner of a room. I love the space but not enough room for shelves. I have those scattered about with books in no particular order.

    1. When my daughter was little she used to do the same thing. I kept them all on the top shelves where she couldn't reach. I didn't have as many back then, so I just kept hers on the lower shelves so she could reach then. Now she's almost 6 and has the utmost respect for them, so she has her own book shelf in her room, and I have full use of mine, finally. :)

    2. No sharing for me...I get the spare bedroom for an office, and the hubby gets the garage. :) It only took me three years to get here...lol.

  7. Thank you for sharing! I can totally see your love for YA books! I moved last summer so almost all of my books are still packed up. The only ones out now are books I won, borrowed or bought since then. I have a one year old and his favorite thing to do at my old apartment was take my books off my bookshelf. He'd just take them off and throw them on the floor and run away. So my books will have to remain in the box until I find a safer place for them.

    1. My daughter did that when she was little, too, so I put all of her books down low. Now she has her own shelves in her bedroom, like April described above. (It's eerie how much she and I have in common!) Don't worry...he'll grow out of it, and then he'll want to read your books, or at least have you read them to him. :)

  8. I love both your shelves :) April's is stuffed but I like how you tried to put books with the same height together (at least I think you did?) Also, yay for all that Melissa Marr, Holly Black, and Kendare Blake! :D And I also have so, so many awesome-looking books on my kindle that I haven't read :/ I tend to privilege the printed ones.
Jen: I love your office! I really wouldn't mind working in there! And where did you get those awesome posters and maps from?! Your shelves look so spacy and organized - as expected ;) Currently, I'm in dire need of a new shelf but since I'll be moving (again, ugh) in a few months I want to get as little new furniture as possible. So I'm stacking books on top of and in front of other books no matter how much I dislike it. By the way, I like the contrast of your dark shelves against the white walls! And is that a pool outside your window? o.O

    1. Thanks! The posters for Leigh Bardugo's series: one came with an ARC, one a friend got me when she got my copy of S&S signed for me. The TBS poster I got when I preordered the signed book from Malaprop's. :) Moving sucks...I'm not looking forward to moving for (hopefully) the last time because I didn't have all of those books and shelves when we moved to our current place, but I wouldn't trade them. :) And, nope...it's a community pond, stocked with fish...I live in a rural area. :D We have a dock and everything, and our neighbors have a paddle boat. Going to miss it when we finally do move. :( The back patio makes for an awesome reading spot.

    2. lol, that is exactly what I did. I had to maximize the space! So glad someone noticed my mad skills!

  9. I love bookshelves so much. Jen, I absolutely adore the posters you have in your room! These Broken Stars and the maps are totally gorgeous. And your view is so lovely! I love pretty much anything that is on water. My parent's house in FL has a similar set up where a bunch of houses' backyards face a community pond. So cool.

I'm pretty sure I look like the dude in your GIF. My shelves are completely overflowing and I have an enormous stack of library books hanging out on my bedroom floor. It's embarrassing to even think about. Fun post!

  10. Such gorgeous shelves filled to the brim with so many goodies!! I have built ins, floor to ceiling ones, built by my awesome hubby. They're filling up way too fast though..

  12. Soooooo much more organized than mine right now... lol Jen, I'm jealous of your office. And hey, I have the Hush, Hush hardcovers! lol I really enjoyed the first two books when I read them a million years ago. I haven't read the last two yet though.

  13. I love your bookshelves! I feel a little bit crazy saying it, but I love looking at other people's bookshelves. Thanks for sharing them. There are some great books on there.
