The Weekend Update - 8.22.15

Saturday, August 22, 2015 with 8 comments
So, since my end-of-the-week post isn't just about what I got in my mailbox or on my Kindle each week -- though that is a big part of it, I won't lie -- I decided to change up the title and intro a bit.  I might tweak the format a bit over the next few weeks, but for the most part, it'll contain the same stuff: stuff I got, stuff I did, and stuff that's coming up on the blog.  Plus, I get to use the awesome GIF you see here and blow kisses to all the people who sent me lovely books and bookish things.  Oh, and I've started linking up to Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews since I'm not using a specific meme title anymore.  April's also doing her own Stacking the Shelves posts on Sundays.  Stop by and say hi!  =)
Alas, the end of summer is upon us. :( We had Katie's Meet the Teacher night on Thursday, and it went okay, except we found out that her homeroom teacher -- they have one teacher in the morning and one in the afternoon in second grade -- is pregnant and due in late October. I know that I can't hold this against the woman, that it's part of life, but it really makes for an unstable environment when two months into the school year, a nearly full-time substitute teacher has to be put in place while the true teacher goes on maternity leave.

Trust me, this happened to me when I was in kindergarten, and it was just plain weird because the teacher was there for maybe a month and then didn't come back until the very end of the school year. Might as well just take the year off, which is probably best for both mom and baby, anyway. I'd probably have another kiddo if I had that option, but I only get THREE weeks maternity leave at my job. It's the pits, man. Sometimes, I just really wish I could be a stay-at-home mom and home-school my girl. o_O

But enough ranting because I know it could be way worse. She could have the teacher from hell, but at least both of her teachers seem genuinely nice, unlike last year's homeroom teacher. :( And we have soccer to look forward to, which starts up the week after next. And hunting season starts soon, so Daddy will be gone and Katie and I will have the house to ourselves most weekends, which inevitably leads to us reading together and watching movies together and running around the house screaming at the top of our lungs, JUST BECAUSE WE CAN. :D

Whew, that got a little long-winded, didn't it? :P Anyway, here's what I scored this week:

For Review:

Nameless

Nameless by Jennifer Jenkins, thanks to Month9Books - I knew nothing of this book until I read an excerpt (which was awesome and had me immediately heading to Goodreads to add it to my TBR) and saw some serious flailing over it. Now I'll probably put everything else aside to read this stat. :P

Lizard from the Park by Mark Pett, thanks to Simon & Schuster - Katie and I love finding new books to read together and we haven't heard of this one before!

Gifted/Won:

Nothing this week. :D

Traded:

Linger by Maggie Stiefvater - Omigodomigodomigod!!!! My Maggie collection is now COMPLETE! Or, well, as complete as I want it to be, since I don't really need her books for younger readers. (At least I haven't decided that I do yet, lol. :P) And until The Raven King is released, though I've already pre-ordered that one. You guys have no idea how unbelievably happy receiving this book has made me...especially since it's signed like the rest of my Maggie collection!

If you're interested in trading books with me, check out this post. =) I've still got tons available, though if my husband has his way, they'll be going to HPB this weekend! But I'll be adding some newer ARCs to my trade list soon!

Library:

Nothing this week. =)

Purchased:

With #otspsecretsister in full force, I've had to be really good and institute a book-buying ban for myself. So far, it's going well. Though, I did pre-order quite a bit when all those books went on sale on Amazon -- and in order to get some of that awesome swag being offered. :D

So, that's my haul. :) How about you? What did you get this week?

Jen's Currently Reading/Listening To:

Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1)

Bitter Greens
The Weight of FeathersThis has been kind of slow so far, but it's rather intriguing. I mean, it's about libraries and keeping knowledge from people, so obviously I had to read it. :P This is my first Rachel Caine book, if you can believe it. o_O

I had a copy of this for review, but it was rather daunting. Not that the 17+ hour long audio is any less daunting, but it's at least more manageable. :P So far, so good.

The cover drew me to this one, but once I realized it was a retelling of Romeo & Juliet of sorts, I knew I had to read it. And it's lovely so far. I can definitely see it appealing to fans of The Night Circus, though it's still different enough to stand on its own.

Upcoming Reviews:

Looks like I'm behind on some reviews, lol...

  6. We had meet the teacher Thursday too. Ugh. I'd be so disappointed if that was happening--sort of surprised the teacher isn't just taking the year off. I hope it works out ok. Our teacher seems nice though I spoke to her for maybe 3 minutes. We'll see how it all goes. I can't believe it starts TOMORROW. EEPS. Read Nameless now and then let me know how it is please? I hate e-arcs but wondering if I should make an acceptation for this one.
