The Weekend Update - 10.11.14

Saturday, October 11, 2014 with 13 comments
So, since my end-of-the-week post isn't just about what I got in my mailbox or on my Kindle each week -- though that is a big part of it, I won't lie -- I decided to change up the title and intro a bit.  I might tweak the format a bit over the next few weeks, but for the most part, it'll contain the same stuff: stuff I got, stuff I did, and stuff that's coming up on the blog.  Plus, I get to use the awesome GIF you see here and blow kisses to all the people who sent me lovely books and bookish things.  Oh, and I've started linking up to Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews since I'm not using a specific meme title anymore.  April's also doing her own Stacking the Shelves posts on Sundays.  Stop by and say hi!  =)

Is it terrible that I'm hoping this afternoon's 3pm soccer game gets rained out? It's not that I don't want to see Katie play, but I just have so many great books I want to read...lol. I have a feeling my "schedule" is going to get shucked away for the next few weeks with all of the new books that just landed in my lap! I mean, just look at them all! And these are just the physical items I received:

This also includes my new tee for next weekend. I'm visiting my sis in Austin and we're going to the Texas Teen Book Festival. It's not normally her kind of thing, but she is a huge reader, too, and she's doing me a solid since I give her constant recs and let her borrow whatever books she wants. =)

Anyway, here's what I scored this week:

For Review:

The Winner's Crime (The Winner's Trilogy, #2)Of Dreams and Rust (Of Metal and Wishes, #2)The Boy Next DoorSkandal (Sekret, #2)Mortal Heart (His Fair Assassin, #3)The Secrets We KeepThe Mime Order (The Bone Season, #2)

The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski (ARC) - Gah!!! I am so unbelievably ecstatic to have this in my hands! Also, scared. It's only the second book, and they're separated. o_O

Of Dreams and Rust by Sarah Fine (ARC) - This week's WoW pick has already made it into my hands! I am beyond joyful. It's like the Month of Sarah Fine or something around here. :D

The Boy Next Door by Katie Van Ark (ARC) - This sounds super duper adorable. Plus, figure skating! Woot! Can't ice skate to save my life but I love reading about it!

Skandal by Lindsay Smith (ARC) - I haven't read the first book yet, but I have a signed copy that's been waiting on me for months. Must. Make. This. Happen.

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers (2nd ARC) - Got one of these bad boys a few weeks ago so you know what that means...unless someone wants to borrow it first. ;0)

The Secrets We Keep by Trisha Leaver (ARC) - This totally reminds me of Twins by Caroline B. Cooney but better!

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon (Netgalley) - Wowwy, wow, wow, WOW! I am going to give The Bone Season a re-listen real quick and then I am ON THIS.

audiobooks for review:
In a Handful of Dust (Not a Drop to Drink, #2)Rites of PassageThe Jewel (The Lone City, #1)In Her Wake (Ten Tiny Breaths, #0.5)Burying Water (Burying Water, #1)

Into a Handful of Dust by Mindy McGinnis - Loved the first book...just about broke my heart but I loved it still. This one's just about the same.

Rites of Passage by Joy N. Hensley - I had no plans whatsoever to read this, and then everyone and their mama loved it, so when I was offered a copy of the audio for review, I didn't hesitate a second time.

The Jewel by Amy Ewing - I've seen such mixed reviews for this novel that I just HAVE to check it out for myself, despite the seemingly numerous similarities to The Selection series.

In Her Wake by K.A. Tucker - I've loved this series and I'm sad that it's over, but at least we get this one final glimpse of it.

Burying Water by K.A. Tucker - As I said, I've loved her Ten Tiny Breaths series, but I'm anxious to try something new from the author, as well. Probably going to be lots of feels.

Won/Freebies:

Chaos (Guards of the Shadowlands #3)This Night So Dark (Starbound, #1.5)

Chaos by Sarah Fine - Won a copy from a Goodreads First Reads giveaway! Now my collection is complete!!!! :D (review)

This Night So Dark by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner - I have a feeling that once I finish this, I'm going to immediately need to start This Shattered World

So, that's my haul. How about you? What did you get this week?

Jen's Currently Reading/Listening To:

Rites of PassageLailah (The Styclar Saga, #1)I am SO in the mood for a book like this. Those grabby hands on the cover still creep me out, but the promise of vampires and other paranormal elements has me eager to really get into this. I've seen some mixed reviews, but I'm going to remain optimistic.

Figured I've waited long enough, listened to the hype for too long, so I've got to get to this one right away. Hope the audio makes the story even more amazing than I've already heard it is. Not my normal cup of tea, but I'm all for branching out and experiencing new things. Wish me luck!

  1. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on Lailah, Jen! The concept is amazing, right? And YES! The Mime Order! That one is going to be amazing (or so I hope). To be honest, I'm due for a Bone Season reread as well. I hope you have a good week ahead of you x

  4. I'm so happy to see you got both The Winner's Crime and Of Dreams and Rust. I know you loved the first books in both of those series. I'm really excited for The Secrets We Keep. I don't know why exactly, but that one has been super high on my TBR since I first heard about it. I still need to read The Bone Season. I want to, but I also kind of want to wait until all 7 books are out before I pick it up.

Hope you love all your new reads. I'll do a rain dance for you. :)

  5. You have so many good reads ahead of you!! No one would blame you for wishing the soccer game gets rained out! I am a little envious over The Winner's Crime and Of Dreams and Rust (ok, truthfully, a lot envious) but I hope you love them! I just recently finished Mortal Heart and am about to finish Chaos and love both. And my co-blogger Ashley loved In a Handful of Dust! I could keep fangirling over these books but i'll stop there :) Happy reading!!

  6. I wish I could go to the Texas Teen Book Festival. We could actually meet! But alas, I didn't plan for it, so I don't think there's a way I could make it happen at this point. :(

Anyway, enough of the sads. YOU HAVE SO MANY GREAT BOOKS IN YOUR POSSESSION, JEN! AHHH! My head is spinning just looking at your pictures! *grabby hands* I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE WINNER'S CRIME! I finally read The Winner's Curse about two weeks ago, and I cannot stop thinking about it. It's definitely one of my favorites of the year. I have so many feels where that story is concerned. <3 I can't wait to see what you think of the sequel. I hope our hearts don't shatter completely. I feel like Of Metal and Wishes just came out, and yet, here we have the ARC for Of Dreams and Rust out in the wild! Crazy! Sarah Fine is a machine! I feel as if I should read the Sanctum series before I read this one, so that's what I'll be doing soon. :)

I'm sooooo happy you LOVED In a Handful of Dust. I'm purchasing a hardcover copy very soon! I LOVED Not a Drop to Drink, so the sequel has a lot to live up to. I hope I connect with it just as strongly as you did. :) Rites of Passage was fantastic! I can't wait to see how you get on with it!

Enjoy all of your latest additions, girly! I'm sure you'll find them incredible!

  11. Such a cool week! I need that shirt. That shirt is life. Oh mi god. I was also literally going "why is everyone getting a copy of Skandal? Didn't that book come out like a year ago?" (I got it confused with Sekret.) So yeah, lol.
