In My Mailbox #61

Saturday, December 22, 2012 with 13 comments

In My Mailbox is hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren.  It's a weekly meme where we all get to brag about the books and swag we got in the mail, for review, won in contests, etc.

So, after that amazing haul last week, I took it easy on the requesting and purchasing this week so that I might have at least a minuscule chance of catching up.  But probably  not.

For Review:

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson - I featured this book as my WoW a few weeks back.  Never heard of the Bluebeard fairy tale until this book, but I'm excited to give it a go.

School Spirits by Rachel Hawkins - Loved the Hex Hall series.  Wasn't the biggest fan of the resolution in Spell Bound, but authors can't make everyone happy, I suppose.  :P  I love that the covers are conceptually similar to those for the Hex Hall books but that they stand apart.  Can't wait to find out if Izzy is as snarky as Sophie!

Big, big thanks to Random House, Disney Hyperion, and Netgalley!!!

Purchased:

The Assassin's Curse by Cassandra Rose Clarke - I had a galley of this but it was before I got my Paperwhite, so as luck would have it, it expired before I got to it.  But I really want to read it, and it was on sale!

Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally - I keep hearing how good this series of companion novels is.  And then I found this one on sale and I knew I had to have it. Now, how long it takes me to read it is up for debate.

Sean Griswold's Head by Lindsey Leavitt - I'm preparing to read Leavitt's newest novel Going Vintage and I had wanted to read this one when it was first released, and then I saw it on sale, and the rest is history.

I am going to try really, super-duper hard not to get any new books next week so that I can spend time with the ones I already have.  But it's an addiction, finding new books.  I'm on vacation until the 2nd, so I fear there is a trip to the flagship HPB in my future.  My whole family loves to take trips there, so if they offer, I'll be hard-pressed to say no.  Wish me luck!

  5. The Assassin's Curse was really good! A light, entertaining fantasy novel with excellent characters. I think you'll like it, Jen! Also, Strands of Bronze and Gold sounds so interesting, especially since I adore YA historical fiction. :) Awesome haul and happy holidays!

  6. Strands of Bronze and Gold sounds goooooooooood. I wasn't familiar with the tale until I read Kill Me Softly earlier this year. I'll be awaiting your review of that one! I bought Catching Jordan when it was super cheap on sale a few weeks ago too! Looking forward to getting to it at some point. I hope you enjoy! :)

  9. Ahhhhhh, I love your haul! Strands of bronze and gold! <3 That book is high on my wish list. Sounds awesome. I love fairytales and retellings, but I haven't seen any retelling from this story before (expect for a little part in Kill me softly) School spirits also sounds very good. I liked Hex Hall.

& I really want to read The assassin's curse. Happy reading!

  11. AHHH -- been dying for Strands of B and G -- I was approved on Edelweiss way back, but there was some kind of weird glitch and I couldn't get access to the title. So I'm really hoping that I get approved on NetGalley. As a child, I loved creepy stories and Blackbeard was one of my favorite fairy tales growing up!
