It's been months since Aria last saw Perry. Months since Perry was named Blood Lord of the Tides, and Aria was charged with an impossible mission. Now, finally, they are about to be reunited. But their reunion is far from perfect. The Tides don't take kindly to Aria, a former Dweller. And with the worsening Aether storms threatening the tribe's precarious existence, Aria begins to fear that leaving Perry behind might be the only way to save them both.
Threatened by false friends, hidden enemies, and powerful temptations, Aria and Perry wonder, Can their love survive through the ever night?
In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.
Leave it to Veronica Rossi to remind me that, yes, sometimes a sequel
can surpass the first book in awesomeness. After reading
Roar and Liv last month, I was absolutely
dying to read
Through the Ever Night. I've been anticipating this sequel since I turned the last page in
Under the Never Sky, and I couldn't be more impressed with how this series is progressing.
There was a lot of crazy in the first book, and Rossi has kicked it up a notch with this second installment. My heart may have skipped a beat a time or two during the course of the novel...or stopped completely, I can't be sure. Suffice it to say, this book was
intense. Unbelievably, gut-wrenchingly intense. Loyalties will be tested, and new alliances will be forged. Bad times are ahead, so prepare yourself.
But alongside that action and adventure is equally great character growth and development. If Roar wasn't my favorite character before, he most definitely is now. New layers are even added to Cinder, despite the fact that he doesn't vocalize much. The friendships between the characters, be it Roar and Aria or Cinder and Perry, were so genuine and proved to be further development for each character as they deign to learn more about each other.
Perry and Aria have a lot to overcome in this story, not just from their lives prior to their chance encounter but also with respect to how others are going to respond to their relationship. They come from two different worlds, after all. It isn't easy going for them by any means, and sure, my heart was in my throat at times, but I never lost hope. Though, I
did have to catch my breath.
I continue to find the romance realistic and fulfilling, but I also love that it doesn't take center stage. The environment is becoming unstable, the Tides are in a weakened state, and there's still been no word from Liv. So many other obstacles in the forefront of this storyline, and they all take precedence over the love story.
Through the Ever Night picks up where
Under the Never Sky left off, with tensions mounting between the Dwellers and the Outsiders. And though it may not be the biggest threat Aria and Perry face at the moment, I loved how the differences between the sects were further explored in the sequel, especially because of Aria's appearance with Perry when he returns to the Tides. There will always be dissenters who refuse any kind of change, but there are also those who are willing to accept it. This simple fact was perfectly portrayed and expanded upon in
Through the Ever Night.
I could never have predicted the turn this story would take. I was prepared to be gutted one moment and then completely giddy the next. It's a fast-paced read, much like
Under the Never Sky, and it's full of all the feels. And that ending! It was just so utterly, completely satisfying. There was never a moment when I considered
not finishing this series, but if there had been, this sequel would have removed any lingering doubts.
Favorite Quotes:
"What?" she asked.
His hands slid to her hips. "You're incredible."
"That's not what you were thinking."
"Was so. I always think that." He leaned in, twisting a strand of her hair around his finger as he kissed her bottom lip. "But I was also wondering what you were doing around Butter today."
Aria laughed. That was attractive. She smelled like horse. "Do you ever miss anything?"
Perry smiled. "You, all the time."
He surprised her by taking her hand and threading his fingers through hers. "You already
are an Outsider. You fit everywhere. You just don't see it yet."
She stared at their hands. He'd never done that before.
Roar gave her a droll look. "It's just odd having you lay your hand on my arm all the time," he said, responding to her thoughts.
Yes, but this feels intimate. Don't you think it does? I don't mean that I think we're being too intimate. I guess I do. Roar, sometimes it's really hard to get used to this.
Roar flashed a grin. "Aria, this isn't intimate. If I
were being intimate with you, trust me, you'd know."

Review: Into the Still Blue by Veronica Rossi
Author: Veronica Rossi
Series: Under the Never Sky, book #3

Hmmm...what to say about this finale that hasn't already been said? Well, how about the fact that I didn't seem to enjoy it nearly as much as everyone else? Oh, it was a solid finish, don't get me wrong. But I found my mind wandering a lot. I cared what happened to Aria and Perry and Roar -- obviously, or I wouldn't have bothered picking this book up -- but it wasn't with any sense of urgency.
I don't know whether this is related to my recent apathy towards finales in general, or if it had more to do with all the great reviews I'd seen circulating prior to my reading of the title and the expectations that arose in me because of them. But I am seriously feeling some series finale burnout right now. And maybe just series burnout in general. I'm really trying to limit the number of series I start this year because of it. But I digress. I saw great reviews, I knew I'd love this one, and then...I didn't.
I didn't hate it. There was plenty of action and suspense. Plenty of Aria and Perry and plenty of sweet moments between them. I could have used more Roar, though. I could always use more Roar. It wasn't until the last quarter or so of the book that I found myself engaged by the story again. Maybe it was the fact that I found it rather easy to predict the twists, the betrayals, the way in which plans would go awry. I don't know. I wish I could explain why this book hit me differently than the previous two, which I loved. I wish someone else could explain it to me.
Into the Still Blue didn't feel any different than Under the Never Sky or Through the Ever Night. The characters were still great, having already been fleshed out in the previous books. The setting was just as awe-inspiring, with the aether swirling in the sky and the Still Blue calling to anyone who dared to survive. The villains were just as villainous as I remembered, too. But something was missing. Or, maybe I was just anticipating missing this series and the wonderful characters Rossi has created, and so I hardened my heart against this book before I even got to feel anything.
I'm going to go with that last one because so many of my friends thought this was one of the best finales they've read, and that sounds about right, considering my love for the rest of the series. So, take this review with a grain of salt. I feel like I'm not in my right mind, which is part of the reason I waited so long to post this review.

Short Story Sunday #1: Roar and Liv by Veronica Rossi
And so, every Sunday for the foreseeable future, I would like to highlight short stories and novellas set in worlds I've already come to love and learn a little more about some of the secondary characters in my favorite novels. Waiting on Wednesday: Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's WoW selection is...

In this second book in her spellbinding Under the Never Sky trilogy, Veronica Rossi combines fantasy and dystopian elements to create a captivating love story as perilous as it is unforgettable.
Why I'm waiting: First, I love this cover. I love that they kept the cover theme from the first novel instead of changing it up mid-series. Sure, that's not how I pictured Perry -- at all -- but it works. I loved Under the Never Sky, especially the fact that Aria and Perry started off as enemies, and I can't wait to see where the story takes them in this next installment. I love this world, aether and all, and I'm ready to get back to it!

From Goodreads:
Aria is a teenager in the enclosed city of Reverie. Like all Dwellers, she spends her time with friends in virtual environments, called Realms, accessed through an eyepiece called a Smarteye. Aria enjoys the Realms and the easy life in Reverie. When she is forced out of the pod for a crime she did not commit, she believes her death is imminent. The outside world is known as The Death Shop, with danger in every direction.
As an Outsider, Perry has always known hunger, vicious predators, and violent energy storms from the swirling electrified atmosphere called the Aether. A bit of an outcast even among his hunting tribe, Perry withstands these daily tests with his exceptional abilities, as he is gifted with powerful senses that enable him to scent danger, food and even human emotions.
They come together reluctantly, for Aria must depend on Perry, whom she considers a barbarian, to help her get back to Reverie, while Perry needs Aria to help unravel the mystery of his beloved nephew’s abduction by the Dwellers. Together they embark on a journey challenged as much by their prejudices as by encounters with cannibals and wolves. But to their surprise, Aria and Perry forge an unlikely love - one that will forever change the fate of all who live UNDER THE NEVER SKY.
I buddy-read this one with my friend Michele over at A Belle’s Tales as part of the DAC 2012. (Her review can be found here.)
Under the Never Sky is one of those books that, had I been able to, I would have stayed up until 5am to finish, like Chele did. No hard feelings, Michele…I know you can’t help yourself when it comes to yummy fictional boys. :D
As I was saying, it was one of those books. You know the kind I’m talking about…fast-paced and very hard to put down once you get started. And for this book, that was right from the very first page for me. No respite for the weary here. Once the action gets going – and I’m serious, it’s almost right from the start – it doesn’t stop, and it took all my effort to stop reading and make myself go to bed that first night. And I immediately finished the book the next day because I just had to know how the trek was going. (That, and Michele was very eager to discuss since she’d already finished it…lol.)
Okay, so you know there’s action, but there’s also a very engaging love story. Based on the premise for this book, I wasn’t expecting much in the way of romantic encounters, maybe because I was expecting the characters’ prejudices against each other to really be too much for them to ever forge a connection. Prejudice has a way of doing that. But the love in this story is to be revered. They hate each other. They tolerate each other. Bad things happen. More bad things happen. They rely on each other. They become friends. And THEN they fall in love. It’s beautiful, really, in the way that it’s realistic and not an immediate, all-consuming love.
This story is intriguing and amazing and another dozen adjectives that mean awesome. It depicts the ultimate sibling rivalry. It portrays an honest and open relationship. It reveals how appearances can be deceiving. And with all of that, it shows how, even in the future, some things never change. In this novel, it’s the Dwellers versus the Outsiders, but the difference between these two sects could be simplified as the “haves” and “have-nots.” Whether by choice or out of necessity, this is how the world works, and apparently, that’s how it will always work. I guess what I’m saying is, I value the honesty of this book.
Just thinking about certain things from this book makes me want to go back and re-read it. Or purchase the audio so I can listen to it at work, as I am sometimes wont to do. So, yeah, for my first Debut Author Challenge book, I couldn’t have asked for a better pick. If this book is any indication of how the rest of the books I read this year are going to go, I am going to be riding Cloud Nine for a very long time.

TGIF #23 - Recommend It
TGIF is hosted by Ginger at GReads! In this weekly feature, Ginger poses a question to her followers and then asks everyone to link up at the end of the post, sharing their responses.
Um, all of them??? Just kidding...sort of. There were a couple that weren't as good as I'd hoped, but for the most part, I'd still recommend them because what might not be my cup of tea might just be someone else's.
That said, of the last ten books I've read, I'd most heartily recommend the following:
Those three were all
Do you agree that these are all awesome books? If not, what would you pick in their place?
