Juliet Newman has it all. A picture-perfect family; a handsome, loving boyfriend; and a foolproof life plan: ace her SATs, get accepted into Harvard early decision, and live happily ever after.
But when her dad moves out and her mom loses it, Juliet begins questioning the rules she’s always lived by. And to make everything even more complicated there’s Declan, the gorgeous boy who makes her feel alive and spontaneous—and who’s totally off-limits. Torn between the life she always thought she wanted and one she never knew was possible, Juliet begins to wonder: What if perfect isn't all it’s cracked up to be?
Melissa Kantor once again delivers a tale that is equal parts surprising, humorous, heartbreaking, and romantic. Powerful and honest, Juliet’s story brilliantly portrays the highs and lows of life in high school and will resonate with any reader who has experienced either.
Last year I read
Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor and absolutely loved it. It made me laugh and cry and basically stole my heart. So when I saw Better than Perfect on Edelwiess, I could not resist requesting it. It was good but I'll admit it didn't hold that same magic for me that
Maybe One Day did. It didn't effect me as emotionally and I was kind of expecting/hoping it would.
Juliet's life is pretty much perfect. At least it was, but now with new family developments, everything starts to unravel around her. One particular event, which is not mentioned in the description, really messes Juliet up. Rightly so, because it's kind of a doozy. I can speak from experience, that when tragedies like this happen, it changes you. Drastically.
Juliet makes mistakes. She's not herself, and she questions everything she's ever believed, and I really connected with that. She meets new people, and begins to explore who "She" wants to be verses who everyone around her has expected her to be.
I really liked that part of the story. I think that's a very important lesson to learn in life. My biggest complaint, is that I wish it would have focused more on her family relationships. There was a lot going on there, and it deserved more attention. But her relationship with her "perfect" boyfriend was hashed out well.
I'm having trouble writing this review honestly, because there are things I want to talk about, but I can't because of spoils. Over all, I did really liked Better Than Perfect. The ending left a little more to be desired though. Like just one more page.. lol. but now I'm being nit picky.
About the author:
Melissa Kantor lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her family. Her most recent book, "Maybe
One Day," tells the story of two best friends and what happens when one of them gets sick with a life-threatening illness. "When I was in my twenties, my father was diagnosed with leukemia. I always wanted to write about what happened to him, but it took me two decades to write this book. I think I needed that time to figure out what I wanted to say."

Waiting on Wednesday: Better Than Perfect & All the Rage
"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
This week's WoW selections are...
's Pick:
Author: Melissa Kantor
Series: n/a
Publisher: HaperTeen
Publication Date: February 17th, 2015
While getting our TTT together for this week, it made me think of how much I'm looking forward to this book. I loved Maybe One Day and I'm hoping I will love this one just as much. Thankfully I won't have to wait until February to read it. I'll be getting to this one as soon as possible. :)
's Pick:
Author: Courtney Summers
Series: n/a
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: April 14, 2015
So, I was just saying how I needed to read more from Courtney Summers after loving This is Not a Test, and I think I know which one I want to read next. If TiNaT is any indication, this will not be an easy book to read, but it will be honest and real. And after reading the first chapter, I know I'm going to feel all the rage myself. I hadn't planned to feature this book this week, but the cover was revealed yesterday and I checked out that sneak peek, and I knew I had to switch out my pick for this week. This book is going to be amazing and sad and poignant and I cannot wait until I have the opportunity to read the whole thing.
What are you desperately waiting for this Wednesday? Let us know in the comments or share a link to your own WoW post!
