Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Here's what I'm teasing this week:

Publication Date: October 15, 2013
Source: received from publisher via Netgalley
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Oh, noes...this sounds bad. *bites nails* And that was only at 3%!!!
Title: For Darkness Shows the Stars
Author: Diana Peterfreund
Series: For Darkness Shows the Stars, book #1
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Publication Date: June 12, 2012
Source: purchased
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
I've only just started this book, but I already think it's going to break my heart. I think it's probably a good thing that I don't really remember Persuasion. :) Reading this one (finally) to gear up for Across a Star-Swept Sky, which I've heard equally good things about. Oh, and I'm listening to the audiobook for this author's killer unicorn series. I'm going to be all Peterfreund-ed out. That, or I've found a new favorite author. =)

Ruby never asked for the abilities that almost cost her her life. Now she must call upon them on a daily basis, leading dangerous missions to bring down a corrupt government and breaking into the minds of her enemies. Other kids in the Children’s League call Ruby “Leader”, but she knows what she really is: a monster. My teaser:
When Ruby is entrusted with an explosive secret, she must embark on her most dangerous mission yet: leaving the Children’s League behind. Crucial information about the disease that killed most of America’s children—and turned Ruby and the others who lived into feared and hated outcasts—has survived every attempt to destroy it. But the truth is only saved in one place: a flashdrive in the hands of Liam Stewart, the boy Ruby once believed was her future—and who now wouldn’t recognize her.
As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?
"Not him, I thought, feeling the world shift sideways under my feet. Not him."

It's been several generations since a genetic experiment gone wrong caused the Reduction, decimating humanity and giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology. My teaser:
Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family's estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot's estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth--an almost unrecognizable Kai. And while Elliot wonders if this could be their second chance, Kai seems determined to show Elliot exactly what she gave up when she let him go.
But Elliot soon discovers her old friend carries a secret--one that could change their society . . . or bring it to its knees. And again, she's faced with a choice: cling to what she's been raised to believe, or cast her lot with the only boy she's ever loved, even if she's lost him forever.
Inspired by Jane Austen's Persuasion, For Darkness Shows the Stars is a breathtaking romance about opening your mind to the future and your heart to the one person you know can break it.
"His heart pounded beneath his shirt, but he did not move. The deep thrum sounded so normal, so familiar. This, at least, they had not changed."

Humm I love Austen, but Persuasion was my least favorite. Still, I'm curious about the retelling.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, you're reading For Darkness Shows the Stars? (Also am going to express my admiration yet again for how you are able to juggle so many books. Never fade, FDStS, unicorn books. *sigh*). yes, I can see you really liking the book. And the romance. It probably is a good thing you don't remember Persuasion - neither did I and I found myself surprised by some of the plot points. But I also wanted to pick up the Austen novel afterward, so I hope you have time for that too ;). Across a star-swept sea is good, a tad fluffier than FDStS but if you like the world and the romance, I do think you'll like the sequel's handling of them too :). It'd be really nice if she turns out to be one of your favorite authors! You'll have to let me know how the unicorn books go.
ReplyDeleteLove the teasers, especially the first one. Here is my TT http://cynthiastacey.com/2013/09/24/teaser-tuesday-sept-24/
