The TBR Tag

Last week, we were tagged by Sabrina at I Heart YA Fiction to do a post all about our TBR piles. This tag was created by Rachel at A Perfection Called Books and Dana from Dana Square. It's a great way to discuss how we manage our TBR piles and showcase a few of the titles on them! It also has the potential to be quite embarrassing. =D

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

Jen: Um, like this?

In all seriousness, though, I use Goodreads to add books to my TBR shelf, but I use a spreadsheet and Google calendar to keep track of my review TBR pile. I have a few shelves on GR that assist me in keeping track of these review books, but there is just nothing like that spreadsheet to a spreadsheet nerd like myself.

April: Goodreads...definitely. I keep track of my review books in a Word document.

Is your TBR mostly print or ebook?

Jen: Probably about half and half these days. I have more unread physical copies on my shelf than I care to admit, but the same is true of my Kindle. Oh, wait...you didn't ask about audiobooks...but that's probably a good thing, lol. If we were doing that split, it would probably be 40% print, 40% ebooks, and 20% audiobooks. *sigh*

April: Haha, if you asked me that a couple years ago, I would have said print. Now, it's kindle hands down. I have a serious problem when it comes to buying kindle copies on sale.

How do you determine which book from your TBR to read next?

Jen: Most of the time, I resort to my handy dandy review schedule, i.e. that wonderful spreadsheet I mentioned before. BUT, I'm a bit of a mood reader. So, sometimes, I'll just decide to read a book that's not due for release for months, just on a whim. I'll also nix things off my schedule when I've read enough bad press for a title that I no longer have any interest in reading it. But mostly, I try to read things in order of publication. Though, I have been known to sneak in some older books from my shelves. =)

April: I used to just read what I wanted. It was awesome. For the most part, if I really want to read something, I will read it, but more often than not, I choose a review book that's closest to release.

A book that's been on your TBR list the longest?

Jen: The Graveyard Book I love Neil Gaiman. But for some reason, I am always scared to start his books.

April: City of Fallen Angels I kind of feel ashamed that I haven't read this one yet. I heard that she should have stopped with the first three. So I'm afraid to pick this one up.

A book that you recently added to your TBR pile?

Jen: Last Year's Mistake Just saw this on a WoW post this week and it sounds cute. Sometimes a girl just needs cute. ;)

April:  The Summer of Chasing Mermaids I saw someone add this to their TBR recently and anything that says mermaids sticks out to me because Aubrey is obsessed with them. :)

A book on your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover:

Jen: A Wicked Thing I didn't even know what it was about, but I saw that cover and knew it had to be mine. And then to find out it's a retelling of Sleeping Beauty? Even better.

April: endless I haven't heard all that much about this one, but I added it to my list because the cover is gorgeous.

A book on your TBR that you NEVER plan on actually reading:

Jen: Blackbird (Blackbird, #1) Not a fan of Anna Carey's writing at all. I don't know how I made it through the first two books in the Eve series, but I know I rated them low and it's doubtful I'll ever finish. Don't know why I decided to add this to my TBR, other than everyone else was doing it at the time.

April: misbehaving I quit this series, but not before I added this one to my Goodreads.

Jen: Oh, don't feel bad, April. I've got a ton of Abbi Glines books on my TBR shelf on GR, too, probably even have one or two on my Kindle, but I have no desire to read them now, either.

An unpublished book on your TBR that you're excited for:

Jen: Red Queen (Red Queen trilogy, #1) Soooo many but probably this one most of all.

April: Better than perfect I'm so freaking excited to read this one.

A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read except you:

Jen: Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) I know.

April: outlander Especially now that the Starz show is out.. everyone is reading them.

Jen: Yeah, I'd planned to read it, too, April, but it's mammoth. Even the audio is 30+ hours. I love the show, so I'm just going to stick to that and maybe one day when I have nothing else to read, I'll pick up Outlander. (Yeah, right....nothing else to read, pshaw.)

A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you:

Jen: Obsidian (Lux, #1) Actually, it's the second book that comes so heartily recommended, but I can't very well start the series in the middle, now can I?

April: the winners curse I've had numerous people recommend this one. Good thing I have it! Just wish I had the time.

Jen: I know you have a physical copy, but I was recommended the audio and I'm kind of in love with it now. And one of my least favorite narrators performs it, if that tells you anything about just how good the audiobook is.

A book on your TBR that you're dying to read:

Jen: Unmade (The Lynburn Legacy, #3) Soon, my precious...soon.

April: the infinite sea This just came out...and, oh, how I want to read it. Maybe someday. lol.

The number of books on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

Jen: 1,662...and growing by the day...it was 1,646 when I first started this post :P

April: 855, I guess that's not too bad in comparison to Jen's. lol

  4. Yay! This looks fun and a good way to look at my TBR shelf a bit closer. Guessing it's ok if I do this in a week or so when I'm back from my break? Jen-some of ours will most likely be the same--like I STILL haven't read that Neil Gaiman book either! My sister has been telling me to read it for years but I've not yet. I even own it.

  5. I did mine that will be up on Sunday. Oh my. Now I don't feel too bad about having about 1300 print books to read. Whelp.

  7. Thanks for tagging me! I saw this last week and wanted to do it but thought it would be pretty lame to tag myself :)
My TBR is scary! I have over 600 physical books and I don't even know how many ebooks. This will be fun!

  8. This is really cool. MY TBR is pretty large, but the pile of "need to read" books is pretty under control... for now.

  9. Really enjoyed reading this tag! It's great how all book bloggers have literally the same problem - too many books, not enough time! I really want to read Outlander but I am put off by the size. Maybe when I finally finish Game of Thrones!

  10. The TBR pile debate is one that I honestly fear to venture into. I really have no schedule, and I pick up whatever looks good. I recently tried to make a TBR for each season with 5 books, and that seems to be going well. I don't want to force myself to read a book that I am not ready to read. I want this to be fun, and I just have to be in the mood to read a book.

  11. haha this was a fun read! I'm really getting into book tags. Yeah... my to be read list is huge. 350 on Goodreads, 180 that I own but haven't read and tons of ebooks! hehe glad I'm not the only one. :) Almost all of Jen's books are on my list! Except I've read the second 'trilogy' of Mortal Instruments. It's good, but not quite as good as the first, though I like the Simon and Magnus parts.

  12. Thanks for tagging me, girls!
I adore the Lux series, The Winner's Curse, and Finnikin - so I highly recommend you get to them at some point!
I'm really looking forward to Sarah Ockler's newest (such a sweet cover), A Wicked Thing, and Last Year's Mistake. Hopefully we will love them. :D

  13. I was keeping track of mine on GR, but then Giveaways happened. :D Now I use GR as a reference but put the ones I most want to read on a wishlist over on Google. I check that list every day for price drops. I use Google calendar too for my blog tour posts that need to be read and go up.
