Top Ten Tuesday: Books We Almost Put Down But Didn't

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome ladies at The Broke and the Bookish. Apparently, they are overly fond of list-making and love to share their bookish lists with the rest of us book nerds.  =) We're game.

This week's list features the Top Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn't:

April's picks:

After The EndBeing Sloane JacobsThe Secret Diamond SistersCrashThe HostWarm bodiesshark BaitForbiddenloving summerBlood Red Road

I'm pretty quick to put a book down if I'm not feeling it but sometimes you just have to push through. And a lot of times I'm glad I did, but then there are those times I'm not so glad and I have a mixture of both in this list. lol. After the End wasn't what I was expecting but I'm glad I kept reading because I did really like it. Being Sloane Jacobs was mostly an issue with one of the Narrators, but also it was a bit cheesy and predictable. The Secret Diamond Sisters was one of those I wish I had put down. I kept waiting for a plot but nothing came. Crash, well that was a buddy read, and so we made fun of it together. That's the only thing that kept me going. Holy Moly was the guy love interest a tool. Ahhhhh The Host!!! This is one of my favorite books ever, so I'm glad I hung in there. A friend told me before I picked it up that the beginning was a little slow, but to keep going because its amazing. I actually re read it last year and loved it even more the second time. Warm Bodies was weird. It just was.. the movie is so much better. All the crap that almost made me put it down was cut. Shark Bait was tough in the beginning. I eventually got into it, and really loved the story. I wish I could say the same for the following books though. They get way too long winded. Forbidden doesn't need much of an explanation. Incest... there are times I thought.. "I don't know if I can do this" But I'm so happy I did. Now I want to boink my brother. ( totally kidding ) Loving Summer, ugh... I picked it up out of curiosity. Everything about this book screamed "The Summer I Turned Pretty". Boy was I right, worst knock off ever. I only kept reading so I could list all the similarities in my review. And last of all, Blood Red Road.. what an awesome book. The dialect threw me a little early on, but after going back and re-reading the first 2 chapters I was able to get into it.

Jen's picks:

First things first. You should know that I rarely continue reading a book these days if it hasn't captured my interest early on. Ain't nobody got time for that. But when I first started blogging, I read a ton of crappy books just because I didn't know how to not finish them, ya know? The idea of DNFing a book -- and using DNF as a verb! -- was so foreign to me back then. Now, not so much. Here are the books that I struggled with but eventually finished, whether I ended up liking them or not:

The ones I loathed -- and will not be continuing the series, no matter how far I might already be into it:

Article 5 (Article 5, #1)Death Sworn (Death Sworn, #1)Halo (Halo, #1)Silence (Hush, Hush, #3)Eve (Eve, #1)

The ones that were disappointing but my curiosity won't let me NOT continue the series:

Hollow City (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, #2)The Selection (The Selection, #1)

The ones that got off to a bad start but that I more or less ended up enjoying:

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1)The Host (The Host, #1)The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks

  1. I love it one a book grabs me from the very beginning, and, to be honest I get a strong feeling within the first few pages - sometimes even less - as to whether or not this is going to one I will enjoy.
I hate giving up on books, but occasionally I have done so ... it's a deflating feeling when a much anticipated book doesn't live up to your expectations isn't it!!

  2. There are a few books that really have a slow agonizing start, but I am still glad that the latter picked up (and I ended up liking so much). Same as April, I am quick with putting a book down or putting it on hold (til forever MUAHA no jk I sometimes pick them up soon) I want to continue The Selection BUT I am still raging over America ugh (and I heard that she's more infuriating in The Elites) :(

  3. I haven't heard many good things about Article 5. >_< I don't think I'll be rushing after it. I didn't enjoy Miss Peregrine's so I don't think I'll be going for Hollow City either. And frankly I'm wary of the size of the Host! lol It's MASSIVE.

  4. A lot there sitting in my TBR pile. hmmm... You've got me pondering their future. Being Sloane Jacobs was very predictable. I just read it faster. :)

  5. I didn't like Frankie Landau-Banks at first either... but it did get MUCH better as the book went on. And I feel the same way about Miss Peregrine's. I didn't love the first book, but those pictures make me too curious to not give Hollow City a try.

  6. I definitely agree the start to The Host was a little slow, but dang, that book is good. Glad you stuck it out! I really enjoyed Warm Bodies, so I'm wondering what about it exactly you didn't like? Just curious.

  7. I thought about not reading Forbidden, but I was far too curious - although I really didn't love it either! I'm curious to see AtU on the list though! I really liked the beginning :)

And I loved the endings in MJ And Requiem - but I can definitely see how others wouldn't.

Eve I plugged through, but I really couldn't stand it. So disappointing!

  8. I haven't seen many good remarks about Article 5. :( Not my kind of books anyway. I'm sad you felt The Selection was a disappointment. I finally got the audio and hope to listen to it soon. Darn. :(

  10. Blood Red Road is also on my list. The dialect was hard for me to get into the book at first too, but after a while I didn't even notice it. And I think it did a great job of adding to the story. I am so glad that I didn't put it down either! I love it.
    Wonderful lists!

  11. I forced myself to finish After the end, I wish I didn't.. I'm happy it turned out better for you. The host was also a DNF for me. Death sworn was mweehh.

  12. I actually liked Warm Bodies as a book. It's just... different from the movie. Both are great, IMO.

I had a hard time doing this TTT. Usually if I really dislike a book, I'll just put it down and move on to something else. Having to come up with ten books that I almost put down was difficult!

  13. Interesting lists! I haven't read many of these yet, and some I'm reconsidering based on seeing them on some people's "almost put down and wish I had" lists. ;-) I have seen Across the Universe on several "almost put it down and so glad I didn't" lists, though, which tells me that if I'm not thrilled with it in the beginning, I should keep going.... so I'm keeping that one on my TBR list.

  14. I really loved The Host but the Twilight series made my list this week (that's right, the entire series). Great picks!

  15. Oh so glad you ended up liking The Host, Jen. It truly is one of my favourites. I don't care what anybody says, but it's my kind of Sci-Fi: just enough world-building and not a lot of painfully manufactured jargons. :)

    Great post, ladies.
