Teaser Tuesday #40: Prodigy by Marie Lu

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week's teaser comes from the following book:

Add to Goodreads
Title: Prodigy
Author: Marie Lu
Series: Legend, book #2
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Publication Date: January 29, 2013
Source: ARC gifted by Jen at YA Romantics
Purchase: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

June and Day arrive in Vegas just as the unthinkable happens: the Elector Primo dies, and his son Anden takes his place. With the Republic edging closer to chaos, the two join a group of Patriot rebels eager to help Day rescue his brother and offer passage to the Colonies. They have only one request—June and Day must assassinate the new Elector.

It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long.

But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong?

In this highly-anticipated sequel, Lu delivers a breathtaking thriller with high stakes and cinematic action.

Okay, it was hard to pick just one, so I've got two yummy teasers for you:

"I'm going to win your trust, too.  I want you to have faith in me.  I have faith in you.  I've had faith in you for a very long time."  He's quiet for a second.  His breathing has quickened, and his eyes change abruptly.  Gone is that sense of distant authority, and in this moment he's just a young man, a human being, and the electricity between us is too much.  In an instant, he turns his face and his lips meet mine.
-- p. 182-183 of ARC
and
Then I wrench away.  My palms break out in a cold sweat.  What was that?  I should have seen this coming and stopped myself right away.  I put my hands on her shoulders.  When I see the hurt pass across her eyes, I realize just how big of a mistake I've made.
-- p. 228 of ARC

Oh, the anguish!  As of this post, I'm not this far into the novel yet, but I am anxious to get back to the novel and see what context these teasers are set in.  So, yeah, I'm gonna go do that now.  =)

FYI - Life Before Legend, a Penguin special containing two short stories told from both Day and June's points-of-view prior to their meeting in Legend, releases today.  I'll be featuring my review of this novella on Short Story Sunday in the coming weeks.

What are you teasing this week?  Be sure to share it in the comments or leave a link so I can stop by!
