Yay, it's finally, officially summer! The kids are out of school, and the temperatures, they are a-rising. =) You know what that means! Free audiobooks! =D SYNC recently announced the list of audiobook pairings up for grabs this summer. Here's what you can grab through Wednesday of next week...for free!

This week's YA title is Headstrong by Patrick Link, performed by Deidrie Henry, Ernie Hudson, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, & Scott Wolf for L.A. Theatre Works.

In the wake of increasing concern over brain trauma in professional athletes, Patrick Link has crafted a story about a retired NFL linebacker who must deal with a family tragedy and his own suffering because of the violence of his chosen sport. Includes a conversation about brain injuries and sports with Dr. Robert Cantu, the Senior Advisor to the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Deidrie Henry, Ernie Hudson, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine and Scott Wolf. Directed by Bart DeLorenzo.

This week's classic title is The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, performed by Scott Brick for Tantor Audio.

When a brute of a man tramples an innocent girl, apparently out of spite, two bystanders catch the fellow and force him to pay reparations to the girl’s family. The brute’s name is Edward Hyde. A respected lawyer, Utterson, hears this story and begins to unravel the seemingly manic behavior of his best friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and his connection with Hyde. Several months earlier, Utterson had drawn up an inexplicable will for the doctor naming Hyde as his heir in the event that he disappears. Fearing his friend has been blackmailed into this arrangement, Utterson probes deeper into both Jekyll and his unlikely protégé. He is increasingly unnerved at each new revelation.

In a forerunner of psychological dramas to come, Robert Louis Stevenson uses Hyde to show that we are both repulsed and attracted to the darker side of life, particularly when we can experience it in anonymity.

Not being a huge fan of football myself -- I know, I should be shunned for living in Texas with no appreciation for the sport -- the only reason I'm remotely interested in the first title is because Scott Wolf is one of the narrators. I used to have the hugest crush on him when he was on Party of Five, lol. I do, however, love the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, so I'll definitely be downloading that audiobook for sure.

How about you? Will you be picking up either of these titles?  Remember, they're only available through Wednesday, and new titles will be put up on Thursday for download.  Other things to note:

I hope you take advantage of this program. I've been doing it for the last few years, and I've had the opportunity to listen to a ton of great audio for free.  If you've never tried audiobooks before, it's a great opportunity to do so without the obligation of buying one that you might not enjoy.  And if you love audiobooks, well, it's a great time to stock up on some titles you may have missed.  Win/win.  =)

  1. I keep forgetting to go over to SYNC to get these. Thanks for the reminder. Head-strong sounds like it should be very good.
