Waiting on Wednesday: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's WoW selection is...

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads
Title:  Of Poseidon
Author:  Anna Banks
Series:  unknown at this time
Publisher:  Feiwel & Friends, an imprint of Macmillan
Publication Date:  May 22, 2012

Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen’s points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

Why I'm waiting:  Just as vampires and werewolves before them, mermaids -- or maybe I should say sea creatures, in general, just to be politically correct -- are the new trend in YA literature this year.  In addition to Of Poseidon, I'm also looking forward to Lies Beneath and Monstrous Beauty, both due out later this year.

I've been a fan of mermaids ever since the first time I saw Disney's The Little Mermaid.  Well, probably even before that, but that movie solidified my love for all things "under the sea".  Heh.  But in all seriousness, this particular mer tale boasts some serious potential and has already garnered some spectacular reviews.  I can't wait to dive in!  Okay, okay...I'll stop.  I just had to get that last one in.  :D

What book are you anxiously awaiting this week?

  24. For some reason I always forget this book hasn’t already been released! In fact, this is super embarrassing but about a week ago I went to Barnes and Noble and I asked a worker where it was. Luckily he was very nice and looked up the release date for me. Excellent pick!

  30. All three of the books you mentioned are some of my highly anticipated books of this year. I haven't read a mermaid book before but Of Poseidon, Lies Beneath and Monstrous Beauty all sound great. You should check out the Vicious Deep too, there's a version of the cover that's really pretty. Nice pick!

  37. I really enjoy mermaid stories. I haven't really read a lot of them, I'm not sure why, but I do love them. When I first heard about this book I was super excited. For one, it's a mermaid (or as they are called in this book Syrena) and two, boy Syrena!! Right?!!! Then there were the little teasers and chats on twitter that made me even more interested. The characters sounded so entertaining...and they definitely were. This book moved along nicely. It was never really slow, but it was not ever really fast paced either. It was just a great flow. Anna was very good about giving us the Syrena history too, which I really enjoyed because too often, books just skim over things and leave us short on the details of why things are.
