{WOW} HEARTSTONE by Elle Katharine White

Wednesday, September 21, 2016 with 8 comments

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's WoW selection is...

's Pick:

Title: Heartstone
Author: Elle Katharine White
Series: n/a
Publisher: HarperCollins
Publication Date: January 17, 2017

Add to Goodreads
A debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms.

They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters.

Passionate, headstrong Aliza Bentaine knows this all too well; she’s already lost one sister to the invading gryphons. So when Lord Merybourne hires a band of Riders to hunt down the horde, Aliza is relieved her home will soon be safe again.

Her relief is short-lived. With the arrival of the haughty and handsome dragonrider, Alastair Daired, Aliza expects a battle; what she doesn’t expect is a romantic clash of wills, pitting words and wit against the pride of an ancient house. Nor does she anticipate the mystery that follows them from Merybourne Manor, its roots running deep as the foundations of the kingdom itself, where something old and dreadful slumbers . . . something far more sinister than gryphons.

It’s a war Aliza is ill-prepared to wage, on a battlefield she’s never known before: one spanning kingdoms, class lines, and the curious nature of her own heart.

Elle Katharine White infuses elements of Austen’s beloved novel with her own brand of magic, crafting a modern epic fantasy that conjures a familiar yet wondrously unique new world.

Pride and Prejudice...and dragons? Sign. Me. The. Eff. Up! And that line about "a Rider in possession of a good blade"...bestill my heart! I think I've found the perfect book. Please let it be as good as it sounds. Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease!!!

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome ladies at The Broke and the Bookish. Apparently, they are overly fond of list-making and love to share their bookish lists with the rest of us book nerds.  =) We're game.

This week's topic is an All About Audio Freebie:

Jen's Picks:

I chose my favorite series to re-read via audio for this week's freebie. In no particular order...

Scarlet (Scarlet, #1)Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1)These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1)Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)The Demon King (Seven Realms, #1)The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1)The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles, #1)Splintered (Splintered, #1)The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy, #1)The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1)Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1)The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1)

I love re-reading favorites, but I especially love re-reading favorites via audio when the series is complete. And when the narrator is truly great, bringing the story to life in a way my own reading can't. What are some of your favorite series on audio?

So, since my end-of-the-week post isn't just about what I got in my mailbox or on my Kindle each week -- though that is a big part of it, I won't lie -- I decided to change up the title and intro a bit.  I might tweak the format a bit over time, but for the most part, it'll contain the same stuff: stuff I got, stuff I did, and stuff that's coming up on the blog.  Plus, I get to use the awesome GIF you see here and blow kisses to all the people who sent me lovely books and bookish things.  Oh, and I've started linking up to Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews and Sunday Post hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer since I'm not using a specific meme title anymore.

I spent my week sorting books and packing books and shipping books, so not a lot else got done, blog-wise. I'm out of shipping supplies at the moment, though, so maybe I can get some stuff done this weekend. I'll probably post an updated version of my #booksfortrade | you pay shipping post to show what's still available tomorrow, but hopefully it won't be the pandemonium that last Sunday's post caused.

I've still been reading, though I've mostly been listening to regency romances again. I can't help it. My library won't add any new YA titles, so I've been left to my own devices, which means perusing other sectors of the library that I don't frequent all that much. It's really helping me reach my Goodreads goal, though:

2016 Reading Challenge

2016 Reading Challenge
Jen (The Starry-Eyed Revue) has read 204 books toward her goal of 225 books.

Almost there! :D

Anyway, here's what I scored this week...

From Publishers/For Review:

After all the new reads I got last week, I am happy to report that I didn't get anything new this week. Though, that doesn't mean that I didn't request any nor that I wasn't offered anything, lol.

Traded:

Nothing new this week, but I have a few pending. :) Check out the tweets below or this post for further details.

Library:

Ruined (Ruined, #1)A Rogue by Any Other Name (The Rules of Scoundrels, #1)One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (The Rules of Scoundrels, #2)A Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1)A Week to Be Wicked (Spindle Cove, #2)

So, that's my haul. =) What fabulous bookmail did you get this week?

Currently Reading:

HeartlessI'm seriously just starting this -- I've been holding off as long as I can but now I'm on the tour and I'm finally letting myself dive in -- so I don't know how it's going to go at all. But I'm really hoping that Cath is reminiscent of Anastasia from OUATIW and starts off sweet and turns, yet somehow still remains a sympathetic character. Either way, I know Marissa Meyer will not disappoint.

Currently Listening:

A Night to Surrender (Spindle Cove, #1)So, I've gone through all of the Sarah MacLean novels my library has on audio and now I'm back to Tessa Dare. I loved her Castles Ever After series, so I'm sure this one won't be any different. And I'm actually going to read the books in the right order this time! :D

As I said in a previous Weekend Update post:
Be on the lookout for a new trade post soon...a different kind of post, too. I know there's been a lot of drama over on the #booksfortrade tag lately, but I still want to complete my collections and help some others along the way. I've thought about posting something regarding all the drama, but what I want to say most is that just because that's what you see on the tag doesn't mean that there isn't beauty happening behind the scenes. I've helped more than a couple people with their collections without asking for anything in return...except maybe some good karma. :) I just wish people focused on that aspect more...
So, here's the deal, guys. I have a ton of books that I just don't plan on ever re-reading, and if Katie ever shows a desire to read them, well, we have access to the capital's library and she has a Kindle, so we're square. But I don't want to pack them all up and haul them all the way to Half Price Books -- which is an hour away from my house -- only to get some paltry amount for the lot of them, which I'd likely then turn around and spend on more books. Or Funkos.

Which is not an altogether bad idea, but there is another option: put these books into the hands of people who really want them. People who possibly collect them.

For the cost of shipping, of course. (Or trade. I'm always open to a trade, if it's mutually beneficial, but I already have too many books -- obviously -- to just trade for any old thing.) I paid for a lot of these books, so it's only fair that I not have to come out of pocket to ship a free book to someone else, right? But -- and this is a big but -- I ship US Priority Mail, which only takes 2-3 days, comes with tracking and picks up straight from my office so I don't even have to make a special trip to the P.O. But the bubble mailer costs around $7 to ship and it only goes up from there, depending on how many books a recipient is requesting. And I'd require payment via PayPal upfront so that I can use those funds to immediately pay for shipping and send the package out ASAP. I mean, I want these books out of my house, stat.

Before I show you what I have, I wanted to share my own wishlists. Maybe we can make some magic happen and make everyone happy. I'm going to be optimistic about this and pretend that I'm not about to be inundated with requests. And I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but I do reserve the right to turn down any trade...or to request a picture of your collection so I can see the pretties. =) Or if you're getting greedy with the freebies, I'll put the kibosh on this. Also, I really want these to go to collectors, first and foremost, so if several people request and I see that one is a big-time collector of a series, they get first dibs. My books, my call.

First, my unicorn wishlist(s). You know,...the titles you'd give your left kidney for. You only need one, right? I will only trade items from the picture to the right for these items, except for swag items. (If you have one of my swag wishlist items, let me know what you're looking for and I'll see if I have it.) Also? That Divergent ARC? I will only trade for either the TOG ARC, TTTT SDCC ARC, Caraval (UK) ARC, or Wintersong ARC.

The Unicorns
ARC of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
ARC of Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen
ARC of On the Fence by Kasie West
ARC of Rebel Angels by Libba Bray
ARC of Asunder by Jodi Meadows

The New & Future Releases (some may not be available yet)
ARC of Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton
ARC of Caraval by Stephanie Garber (UK ARC)
ARC of Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
ARC of Hunted by Meagan Spooner
ARC of Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Swag
Admit One bookmark/ticket for Caraval by Stephanie Garber
The Raven Cycle book hugger illustrated by Maggie Stiefvater
Sampler + buttons of Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Crooked Kingdom poster by Leigh Bardugo

Other than that, please note that I usually prefer to trade like for like (meaning ARC for ARC, HC for HC, PB for PB), though there always exceptions to the rule. The pictures below start with newer and unreleased ARCs, then move to older ARCs and then on to finished copies.

My full wishlists can be found here and here (both Goodreads) or together here (2nd tab on spreadsheet).

I'll be adding these to the #booksfortrade tag later in the day, but I hoped to ease myself back into this. Also, I'm re-upping on supplies so I can send out the books next week. I'm ready to have my spare bedroom back! Especially since I need to get it ready for holiday visitors soon!

So, if you see something you want, email me at mrsjbruce @ gmail dot com or tweet me @starryeyedjen. Leaving a comment on this post is probably the worst way to broker a trade, just sayin'. And if you have something from my wishlist but don't see anything here, hit me up because I have other books I might be willing to part with for the right trade. =)

Happy trading!

You ever have one of those weeks where you just wish you could be a kid again? No responsibilities. No bills. When just doing your best was good enough. Ah, those were the days. And I most definitely had a week like that. And to compensate for my lack of wanting to adult, I spent a lot of time with Katie. We had some children's books to review and Roald Dahl's birthday to celebrate, so it seemed like the perfect time to take a step back and enjoy her childhood.

It's so easy to get caught up in everyday life and forget to be in the moment...something I'm trying to be better about. I know it's not the end of the year yet, but I already have a ton of things I already want to work on in the new year.

But I digress. You're here for the books. And what a bookish week it was!

Here's what I scored this week...

From Publishers/For Review:

So many lovely new books for review this week! I may have gone overboard with my requests from Macmillan (the stack on the left), but these books all just sounded so good. I'll be posting more about each one soon. And Tor Teen sent me a review copy of Updraft -- which I hadn't heard of before but it sounds amazing -- and a finished copy of Vassa in the Night, which I already have an ARC of that I've been trying to fit in for weeks because it sounds like such a me book. It is such a gorgeous book in all its finished glory, trust me. And ignore EOS because that's a finished copy I bought myself. :) It's just hard not to take a million photos of that glorious book.

Traded:

I know I keep saying this, but I plan to post an updated #booksfortrade | Have You Seen This? post soon, but I'll be doing a kind of different format, so check back for that soon! I have a ton of new books going up on offer. Oh, and I updated my lists, too! I'm still looking for a few high profile ARCs, like Throne of Glass, On the Fence, and Scarlet (Gaughen), plus some other 2016 releases, including Wintersong and Traitor to the Throne, and others.

Purchased:

I pre-ordered a hardcover of Empire of Storms, but I also DLed the audio on release day so I could read it before anyone had a chance to spoil it for me. =) I still haven't gotten my notebook yet, though... :*(

Library:

Apollyon (Covenant, #4)The Rose Society (The Young Elites, #2)

Okay, I think I'm finally done with my regency romance kick...for  now. Mostly because the last couple I read were just not that good. :( Now, I'm working on finishing up the Covenant series, but I'm confused. Is this one of those series where it's necessary to read the novellas? Because I didn't read Elixir, and now that I've started this fourth book, I feel like I missed a lot. I also DLed the audio for The Rose Society so I can finish my re-read before picking up The Midnight Star.

So, that's my haul. =) What fabulous bookmail did you get this week?
