Top Ten Tuesday: Tough Subject Matter

Tuesday, September 30, 2014 with 11 comments

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the awesome ladies at The Broke and the Bookish. Apparently, they are overly fond of list-making and love to share their bookish lists with the rest of us book nerds.  =) We're game.

This week's topic is the Top Ten Books That Were Hard For Me To Read...because of the difficulty of the book, the subject matter, because it was cringeworthy -- however you want to interpret.

April's Picks:

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - This one was tough for me because it takes place during World War II. It hurts my heart to read about stuff like that.

Good by S. Walden - This one wasn't necessarily hard for me, but I know that it would be hard for others because it deals with a teacher student romance.

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma - This story has incest. Brother and Sister, and it's not sugar coated at all. It was an excellent book.

A Death Struck Year by Makiia Lucier - Spanish Influenza. That shit is scary. I couldn't stop thinking about what I would do if something like that broke out now. With a six year old... these types of stories scare the living shit out of me.

Me Since You by Laura Wiess - This book was so sad and depressing, it broke my heart.

  1. From your list, I think I found Forbidden the hardest to read. At one point, you're actually rooting for the two because they're kind of cute, but on the other hand you're thinking "If I ever feel this way about my brother, shoot me now".

I also really enjoyed The Book Thief, and The Fault In Our Stars was okay (DON'T SHOOT ME).

  2. Forbidden! I was so hoping I'd see this on a list. It was SUCH a hard book to read, I agree, but I loved it. How raw and disturbing and beautiful it was!

  3. Forbidden was #1 on my list. So good, but so hard to read.

  4. Forbidden. God. I kept having to do gut-checks while I was reading that book.

  5. I'm seeing Forbidden everywhere and that totally makes sense. It really was a hard book for me to read as well. So many conflicting feelings. But really what killed me was the ending. I was so not okay with it. Not okay at all.

    Great list!

  6. Me Since You made my list too. Holy depressing book!!! Forbidden is one of those books that seems like everyone who reads it loves it, but I don't think I could handle reading about that subject.

  8. Oh man, Hopeless is brutal. I love it though. And I'm in the mood to re-read TSoT again. I love Josh Bennett.

  9. Oh yes, The Book Thief was completely hard to read...I mean, especially when in the end we're just lying on the floor sobbing. AND SAME WITH TFIOS. I had a seriously difficult time with Stolen too. It actually just made me really uncomfortable. *shivers* I do want to read Sea of Tranquility though.

  10. I also found The Book Thief hard to read - it's so difficult to read about the injustice so many people faced during that time.
As for TFIOS: when I got the book, I had no idea it had such a hard ending. I actually flew through the book (sure, it was sad, but John Green is just such a great writer!), only to be blindsided by the last few chapters.
